MTN involvement in the sport of athletics dates back to 2002 when MTN debuted with the very famous Lagos International Half marathon in partnership with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria AFN. Before then road race in Nigeria was almost non existent.

Since its inception, the Marathon has helped in generating a higher level of interest for road race in Nigeria as well as exposing Nigerian athletes to regional race circuits and international meets.

In 2005 MTN partnered with National Action Committee on Aids (NACA) and the Nigerian Business Coalition against AIDS (NIBUCA) to generate awareness and galvanize support for the HIV/AIDS. The race was themed “Run for Life Run against HIV/AIDS”. The race became a permanent on the IAAF calendar.

This year MTN is partnering with the Nigerian Police to deliver to the Nigerian public the maiden edition of the “MTN People Police Marathon” scheduled to hold in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on the 26th July 2008.

MTN as the Title sponsor intends to leverage this partnership by exploiting the power of road race as a unifying factor to collectively fight crime in an atmosphere of fun and conviviality as well as position the brand as a corporately socially responsible organization in support of a laudable and just national cause.
